My first substantial ARC break (break in affinity, reality, and
communication - a significant disagreement) with the Cult of $cientology
occurred when I was rudely berated by a truly autocratic "Ethics Officer"
for being late by about 10 minutes when taking a course.

I explained that the subway train I was on was stuck in the tunnel for
about
20 minutes. This was rejected with even more harshly abusive, demeaning
language. It seems that $cientology dogma, which MUST be accepted if you
are
a $cientologist in good "ethical" standing, states that you and you alone
are responsible for your circumstances. I was supposed to know there could
be a delay, and allow time for it. If I did that I would have been there
at
least 30 minutes early every day. Even employers, people that PAY YOU to
work for them, are more understanding that there are circumstances beyond
one's control. The fact is that in the Cult of $cientology YOU PAY THEM,
but
they act as if they own you more than any sane employer ever would. What
colossal arrogance!

I should have told them where to go and demanded my money back right then
and there, but I was a "spiritual seeker" hooked on Dianetics, so I jumped
through their hoops of making amends, etc., to continue with the course.

I only found their promised "total freedom" when I finally freed myself of
this abusive, unscrupulous cult! I managed to get back a nice sum of money
I
had on account too, but it wasn't easy. I had help from another
ex-$cientologist that was once on staff but got screwed over by them and
left.

Good story. I know someone who said he was assigned some punishment
task during his first (and only) course...I forgot whether it was for
asking an inappropriate question about Hubbard's war record, or for
being late for class. It was that and about the escalating prices that
saved him. Also though, he didn't like the content, and thought the
instructors and fellow students were like scary zombies.

Yes, it is obvious that the cult's mindset was always removed from the
reality of society sufficiently to turn off many people that had a sincere
interest. I recall observing several incidents of people becoming alienated
and leaving when I was on course, and at the time I thought it was terrible
this was happening, but of course I couldn't do anything to change it. And
as usual the cult blamed them and never questioned their own actions - "they
wouldn't leave if they didn't have overts, or misunderstood words", etc. I
can't believe I once accepted such nonsense!
