I'd argue that self-preservation, as in dog-eat-dog survival of the fittest, is the most rudimentary stage of evolution. I would think a fully evolved species would recognize that working together for the common good would ultimately be the most beneficial course of action in terms of preserving the species. I think that can be demonstrated in the the behavior of some of the higher-intelligence mammals like apes and dolphins. Kind of humorous in a way, the way humans think things to death. Most of nature moves seamlessly in a world that combines common good, (socialization) with eat or be eaten.
