It appears that rice was being fried in traditional Serbian
cuisine long before Oriental influences made this cooking
technique well known around the world.

A woman making the fusion dish stuffed peppers sauteed some
chopped onions in oil, then added a cup of dry washed rice
with chopped garlic, then sauteed the rice and onion mixture
for some length of time before adding other ingredients,
including ground beef and water.

She says this technique arose independently of oriental
influences. "It's what I learned back home in the village."

Look at Risotto recipes.
