Re: More ideas for Prunella

Pity I haven't anything better to do. I am slumped here, wailing slightly,
doodling...
American kitchens by decades. Fun.

I think, on the whole I like the 70s myself, although I was nonplussed to
see yesterday, while browsing, that I am noshing my food off vintage,
collectable Pyrex plates. (Chelsea design) 8^(

I like Pyrex and I love Pyrosil - that my mother was a rep for them for some
years had nothing to do with it...  <hummm> Bake in it, fry in it, freeze
it, eat out of it, drop it... catch it as it bounces....
Isn;t it awful when something you have and use and think: 'these old things?
But they are so useful...' turn up in collectables?

Not counting genuine antiques, naturally (not that I have any of them in the
kitchen, apart from me...)

Oh, nostalgia - don't you just love it? I looked at the 70s kitchens - everything bright! and cheerful! and pine! and orange! And the only shop to go to was Habitat (though we still have some cupboard units in, I think, beech which have stood the test of time).

I wonder what happened to all that Pyrex stuff we had; and the Melamine plates and bowls we had when the children were small. Currently nothing we use on a daily basis matches, except for some plates which we snaffled from the restaurant my parents-in-law used to own and run. Except, except for the new set of saucepans etc that hubby happily bought for the new induction cooker. He got them quids off from Debenhams because they were on sale during August (I guess people are too busy being on holiday to want to buy cookware), so he's happy.

We don't have a kitchen at the moment. Bless George Foreman and his grill. I must put some more pictures on my website, and perhaps a photo of our current cooking area in the laundry area. At the moment it's fun, a bit like camping, but the 'fun' might fade somewhat as it's likely to be another three weeks at least before it's all finished. (Followed by weeks of arguing about what should go where.)

Going back to colours: the doors, worktops, and floor tiles are all fairly neutral in colour, so we've been thinking about having something a bit more colourful for the walls. The starting point is something similar to what we already have but less orange-y, so I looked around some paint websites and I quite like terracotta for the walls and something not-white/magnolia for the ceiling; on the Dulux website there's Tuscan Terracotta:

and I quite like the third example. But who on earth thinks up these colour names? It seems that in fashion, nude is the new black, but how do I tell people that our ceiling is 'nude glow' without sniggering? I got so muddled when mentioning our colour ideas to our kitchen designer I almost misplonounced 'Dulux'.

Tomorrow the plasterer is back for more plastering; the builders will be attacking the drains, which will be interesting as no-one is quite sure about what they'll find; I'll be updating my website; and hubby will be fretting so I'll send him off to Homebase to buy sample paint pots (mustn't forget some brushes).

PS: Please permit me to be a bit smug, but last week our son was on one of those incomprehensible computer courses. The pass mark is 70%, and he scored 100%. So he's now a Red Hat Certified Engineer. (Yeah, 'Red Hat' - no, I didn't snigger.)
