It zaps round the can and when the note changes you press the off button lift it off.   Most times an inbuilt magnet lifts off the lid too. Apart from the sheer idleness of it all, it leaves a lovely clean cut, totally unsharp and virtually impossible to hurt yourself on it. It occasionally fails on very small squarish tins.
