Well, if you read a couple of books (both called, "Tin Pan Alley") that I've read recently, I think you'll find that you are correct....The reason (these books seem to think) is that when Bill Haley hit the charts with "Rock Around the Clock", he sold so many records that it spelled the death of Tin Pan Alley....There just wasn't any reason to sell sheet music anymore, and almost no more reason to try to sell anything but R & R vinyl.....
