In the old days, most .22 long rifle ammo was marked "range of 1 mile". 
However, that was pretty much all stadard velocity 40 grain bullet stuff. 
With high velocity ammo and .22 magnums, etc., it's possible to go a lot
further. 

This issue has come up before.  Check out:

 

The conclusion is that at 1 mile, a typical .22 would only be going 200
to 300 fps, which puts it below pellet gun velocities.

On the otherhand, if it was a .223, all bets are off.
