During my time in ROK as an member of KMAG I had occasion to see ROK Army trainees using chewing gum to hold the sights in place on their M1 Rifles and M1 Carbines.  And that was in the late 1960s. Real storage stock was packed in cosmoline and vacuum sealed in steel drums.
